Intelligent Transport Systems
MotivationThe ability to communicate wirelessly vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure is a cornerstone for building efficient Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). A harmonised European communication architecture for Cooperative Systems is an important building block for improving transport efficiency, safety and security as well as reducing the environmental impact of road transport. Several projects and initiatives are underway to support this standardisation effort. Apart from the needed standardisation of technical elements, an end-to-end interoperability of services and information flow must be ensured to allow for efficient deployment of ITS all over Europe. |

Research Objectives
|
The Working Group for Advanced Communication and Information Systems covers technologies and standards for robust wireless communication and end-to-end system architectures for Intelligent Transport Systems and Services. The working group coordinates the start-up of R&D activities between EUCAR partners in the domain, monitors harmonisation and standardisation in the area Connected vehicles through ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) enable a new range of products and services to increase safety, security and efficiency prerequisite harmonised Automotive Security is one example of an application area that is currently in focus for the Working Group; apart from the inherent safety risk of any road transport due to complex traffic situations, there is an increasing security threat on European roads. Drivers, vehicles and cargo run the risk of falling prey to criminal activities |

With the help of Intelligent Transport Systems and secure, trustworthy sharing of key information between drivers, transport companies, police and insurance companies, the risk and effect of automotive security breach can be reduced.
Strategic vision
- A harmonised and robust European communication architecture, utilising all available communication media (long and short range), is one enabler for the rollout of efficient and interoperable Intelligent Transport Systems.
- End-to-end interoperability of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services all over Europe requires all relevant stakeholders (e.g. vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, road operators and public authorities) to work together
- Safety, security and efficiency for drivers, vehicles and goods can be improved significantly through future integrated and interoperable connected products and services.

communication e.g. intersection assistance.
