Projects in Focus
UPSCALE is a European project aiming to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional physics-based Computer-Aided Engineering to drastically reduce the development time and increase electric vehicles’ (EVs) performance. IDIADA leads this project with the involvement of Stellantis, Volkswagen Group and Volvo Cars Corporation as industrial end-users.
High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) are key elements in the design and development of vehicles. They are used to simulate, for example, vehicle crash performance, aerodynamic behaviour, or thermal characteristics. These vehicle simulations are very complex and time-consuming. The objective of...
On Thursday, 17 March 2022, the final event of the ENSEMBLE project was live-streamed. The event focussed on the achievements and the results of the project and discussed with experts and stakeholder representatives the needs for adopting this technology in Europe. Stefan Deix (Director of EUCAR), David Storer (CLEPAS’s Director of Research Innovation), Steve Phillips (Secretary General at CEDR), Carlo Giro (Manager EU Goods Transport at IRU), and Marika Hoedemaeker (TNO, ENSEMBLE project coordinator) highlighted the excellent collaboration of all ENSEMBLE partners which played an instrumental role in the development, implementation, and demonstration of the multi-brand platooning...
The ENSEMBLE project is paving the way for the adoption of multi-brand truck platooning in Europe. Truck platooning links two or more trucks in convoy using connectivity, while multi-brand platooning connects vehicles from different manufacturers. This improves energy efficiency, reduces CO2 emissions while increasing traffic efficiency and safety.
The final event of the ENSEMBLE project will be live-streamed on Thursday 17 March 2022. The focus of the event will be on the potential impacts of platooning, including socio-economic and business aspects. This will be an occasion to discuss the results and achievements with high-level experts and speakers.

The LONGRUN project develops efficient and environmentally friendly long-distance powertrains for heavy-duty trucks and coaches. This confirms the commitment of the automotive industry to decrease CO2 emissions in road transport. Thirty partners from the automotive industry, research, logistic companies and road authorities, including three EUCAR members (DAF Trucks, IVECO Group, and Volvo Group), collaborate to increase the sustainability of road transport.
The project has designed and implemented three engines and their drivelines, into demonstrator vehicles (i.e.long-distance coaches and long-haul tractor units). The next step is to assess the performance of the innovation under real...
The automotive industry is committed to achieving the targets for climate neutrality. Consequently, the manufacturers are constantly expanding their portfolios of electric vehicles. However, their market penetration strongly depends on the charging infrastructure availability.
The INCIT-EV project (Large demonstration of user Centric urban and long-range charging solutions to boost an engaging deployment of Electric Vehicles in Europe) aims to demonstrate an innovative set of charging infrastructures, technologies, and associated business models, ready to improve the EV users experience.
Over the next three years, the project will build demonstration environments in Amsterdam,...

On 23 September 2021, ENSEMBLE presented its technical achievements in a live public demonstration on the Sitges-Barcelona road. Participants witnessed in real-time the platooning of seven trucks in response to different use cases. The trucks demonstrated the technical implementations of platoon functionalities carried out during the project. This...
