Project in Focus: THOMSON

The THOMSON project addresses the transition towards high efficient, cleaner and affordable electrified powertrains focusing, in particular, on the 48V architectures. These will allow hybrid vehicles to increase fuel economy and reduce environmental impact and to support a quick penetration on the market. This project is coordinated by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, in close cooperation with Ford of Europe, both EUCAR members are committed to developing and providing sustainable powertrain technologies that contribute to an enhanced quality of life of the EU citizens.
THOMSON will demonstrate how the right combination of advanced engine downsizing/turbocharging technologies, coupled with a...

Project in Focus: ECOCHAMPS

The competitiveness of European road vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers is based on technological leadership, particularly on system optimisation and affordability. The challenge taken up by EUCAR members (DAF, Daimler, FIAT/CRF, IVECO, MAN and Renault) in the ECOCHAMPS (European COmpetitiveness in Commercial Hybrid and AutoMotive PowertrainS) project, is to achieve efficient, compact, low weight, robust and cost-effective hybrid powertrains for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles (buses, medium duty and heavy-duty trucks) with increased functionality, improved performance, comfort, functional safety and emission levels below Euro 6 or VI.
EUCAR members will deliver...

Project in Focus: eCAIMAN

In the project eCAIMAN (Electrolyte, Cathode and Anode Improvements for Market-near Next-generation Lithium Ion Batteries), we bring European expertise together to develop an automotive Li-Ion battery cell that can be produced in Europe. EUCAR members, together with highly skilled partners, will develop a more powerful battery by modifying and improving individual components and technologies to result in a significant overall improvement of the cell.
eCAIMAN scale-up is designed with existing European production technologies and inexpensive materials mined in Europe, thereby reducing the final battery price. The battery will be developed to be integrated into light, medium and heavy-duty...

Project in Focus: ALLIANCE

Six of the European carmakers (Daimler, Volkswagen Group, Toyota Motor Europe, FCA-CRF, Volvo Group, Opel Group), supported by EUCAR, have joined forces to commonly address the high cost issue of innovations in vehicle lightweighting, having identified it as the major bottleneck towards their implementation in vehicle series and mass production.
The ALLIANCE project (AffordabLe LIghtweight Automobiles AlliaNCE) aims to develop novel advanced materials (steel, aluminium, hybrid) and production technologies, aiming at an average 25 % weight reduction over 100k units/year, at costs of < 3 €/kg. Additionally, our members will develop a mass optimiser software tool and a...

Project in Focus: TRANSFORMERS

In the TRANSFORMERS project (Configurable and Adaptable Trucks and Trailers for Optimal Transport Efficiency), EUCAR members developed a solution to achieve 25% energy efficiency per tonne kilometres in a real-world application. This was achieved by combining in a modular approach three concepts:
Rightsizing by means of hybridization,
truck engine downsizing and
trailer design addressing aerodynamics and load efficiency improvements.
Since September 2013 the TRANSFORMERS project successfully developed an innovative tractor-semitrailer and a truck-trailer. The solutions will enable up to 8 % energy saving per tonne kilometre in long haulage and up to 12 % for distribution...

Project in Focus: AdaptIVe

AdaptIVe (Automated Driving Applications and Technologies for Intelligent Vehicles) develops, tests and evaluates automated driving applications for passenger cars and trucks in daily traffic. After three and a half years of European wide cooperation, partners will showcase automated driving functions in the eight built-up demonstrator vehicles during the project’s Final Event in Aachen, Germany, on June 28 and 29, 2017. The two days event will feature driving demonstrations in cars and one truck on public roads and in a simulated urban environment.
The AdaptIVe functions will also be the focus of presentations during a dedicated conference answering questions regarding legal aspects,...
