The European Commission’s framework programmes have been important to Europe at large and industry in particular. They enable a stable research and innovation ecosystem, allowing for different actors to meet, analyse the state of affairs, identify research needs and co-finance joint research and innovation (R&I) projects. EUCAR calls for an ambitious framework programme, prioritizing research and innovation missions for the benefit of society while incorporating and improving on existing successful mechanisms.

On 15 November, 240 key stakeholders in automotive research and innovation met in Brussels for EUCAR’s annual conference. Innovation is key to delivering the benefits of cleaner, safer and smarter mobility for society, in the past and even more in the future. The automotive industry is Europe’s biggest private investor in research and innovation; spending more than €50 billion on R&D each year and employing more than 12 million people all over Europe.

Together with 23 other associations representing industrial research and innovation, the European Council for Automotive R&D (EUCAR) has signed a joint declaration calling for the development of an ambitious European Research & Innovation Framework Programme (FP9) in order to safeguard Europe's future industrial leadership.
As EUCAR, we believe that FP9 should further build on the achievements of Horizon 2020, with the main aim to guarantee sustainable application and implementation of European research to strengthen the industries in Europe.
